PARENT RELATED QUESTIONS |
|
| 1. | Who do I contact if I have a question? |
| If it is a registration related question contact the registrar. All other questions should be directed to the appropriate age group commissioner or president. See Board Members for a list of contacts. | |
| 2. | When should I register my child? |
| Registration for Fall is in early June, while Spring registration is in early January. It is advisable to register as early as possible. In the event that we are unable to place all children on teams, we use the postmark date or time (if on-line registration) as the method for determining what child gets first priority. Example: Seven kids register to play. There are only five openings. The first five children who registered will be awarded the spots while the others will be placed on the waiting list. Waiting list children will have their fees returned if NCYSA is unable to place them on a team at some point during the season. Please note: NCYSA uses this method even if all seven kids registered before the deadline. Submitting an application does not guarantee a spot to play. | |
| 3. | How do I register my child for soccer? |
There are three ways to register.
|
|
| 4. | How do I register online? |
|
|
| 5. | What do I need for “Proof of age”? |
| A copy of a Department of Vital Statistics birth certificate must also accompany all registration forms if the player has not previously played. Please do not send original copy. This must be provided or the child will not be allowed to play. We expect copies of birth certificates when you come to register or just after you register a copy must be mailed to the address given during registration. | |
| 6. | What age group will my child be in? |
| Go to the Birth Year Chart to determine what age group your child will be in. | |
| 7. | How much are the fees? |
| $35.00 for Under 6 and $45.00 for U8 and above. There is additional fee for registering late; this date varies from season to season. It is $10.00 for U-6 and $15.00 for U-8 and above. | |
| 8. | What about a uniform? |
| Each child receives a shirt. This is paid for out of your fees. | |
| 9. | What else does my fees cover? |
| A portion of your soccer fees goes toward field maintenance and referees fees. We also pay fees to Kentucky Youth Soccer Association (a Player fee and an insurance fee.) | |
| 10. | Do I have insurance? |
| The insurance (which is through USYSA) is secondary coverage that may cover the cost of your deductible. See BollingerSoccer.com for more information. If your child is injured during a game or practice, contact your age group commissioner immediately. There are forms that you, the coach and possibly the referee will need to fill out to get the process started. | |
| 11. | When is the soccer season? |
| NCYSA plays a fall season of August-October. This is the regular season with a tournament in late October for the U-8 teams. U-10 and above can play in the state Commonwealth Cup which is early November. The spring season is March-May with a U-8 tournament in June for U-8. U-10 and above can play in the Kohl’s Cup which is usually the first and second week in June. | |
| 12. | Are any of the recreational teams traveling teams? |
| Yes, because we do not have enough U-12 and above in-house teams we are required to traveling to other locations to play games. Half of the games are played at the NCYSA fields while the other half will be away games. There is always a possibility that U-10 could also be traveling teams if there are not enough in house teams to play against. | |
| 13. | What is a seasonal year? |
| A seasonal year is a one-year period that starts August 1st of the fall season and runs through July 31st of the spring season. | |
| 14. | How are teams formed? |
| Each fall teams are formed by an open draw. For U-8 and above please do not request coaches, practice nights, to be put on same team as friend, need to be put on same team to carpool, etc. | |
| 15. | What is the Open Draw? |
| NCYSA is a member of Kentucky Youth Soccer Association and United States Soccer Association. According to their rules and regulations, all recreational soccer teams must be formed using a draw, balanced by birth age (so many juniors and so many senior players, depending on how many children are registered). Players are divided between juniors and seniors and their forms are placed in folders. The board members draws players from a pile according to what age of players he needs to keep all teams even as to age. The process always starts with the fall season. In the spring, players who are new to the program fill spots of non-returning players and are drawn, by age, to fill those spots evenly among all of the teams. | |
| 16. | Who is considered a returning player? |
| A player that played the previous fall season. | |
| 17. | Will my child be placed back on the same team from fall to spring? |
Your child will be place on the same team in the spring as
he/she played on in the fall unless the following rules apply:
|
|
| 18. | I am signing up my child for U-6, can I request that his/her friend be placed on the same team? |
| We will only honor this request for the U-6 age group. You may put the name of a friend or neighbor you would like your child to play with on the registration form or email the registrar. At this age we realize that to small children it is sometimes comforting to know you will have at least one person you know on the team. Chains will not be honored. If you do request to play with a friend, make sure that the friend requests to play with you. | |
| 19. | Can I request that my U8 or older child be placed on a certain team? |
| No, because we must follow the open draw, we cannot place children on teams except for Under 6 (this age group is considered instructional and not a regulated age group.) The only children placed on a team are that of the head coach. He can request 1 assistant coach and his/her or child(ren) will be placed on the team also. If the assistant coach does not return to assist the following season, his/her children go back into the draw. | |
| 20. | Can siblings of the same age group play on the same team? |
| Siblings can play on the same team as long as they are in the same age group. If the siblings are a male and female then they will be placed on a mixed team. Note: A mixed team is usually all males. On the registration form or the online process make sure that you check the box that you want siblings to play on the same team. | |
| 21. | May I request a certain practice night? |
| No, it is very difficult process to make sure all teams in an age group are drawn according to the rules and are balanced. If we tried to accommodate everyone (with almost 400 children in the league) it would be too difficult to keep the teams balanced. The coaches are the ones who get to pick their practice nights, and most of the time this is done after the draw. | |
| 22. | How can I be assured of getting the practice night I want? |
| Coach. Only the coach can decide what practice night he/she prefers. | |
| 23. | But I don’t know anything about soccer, how can I be a coach? |
| Most of the people that coach recreational soccer knew nothing about the sport when they started. KYSA gives soccer clinics to help you in learning drills, the rules of the game, etc. If we can, we try to pair together a head and assistant coach where one has experience. Coaching is a very rewarding experience that gives you an opportunity to spend quality time with your child. Give it a try! | |
| 24. | Are registration fees refundable? |
| Once a child has been placed on a team, we are unable to refund registration fees. If we are unable to place a child on a team, he/she will be placed on the waiting list. If we are still unable to place that child, his/her fees will be refunded. | |
| 25. | How many nights a week do you practice and how long are they? |
| U-6 will not exceed 45 minutes twice per week. Usually after
the U-6 games begins the coach will sometime only practice once
a week, but again this decision is up to the coach. U-8/U10/U12 will not exceed 1 hour twice per week. U-14 and above will not exceed 1 ˝ hour twice per week. |
|
| 26. | What equipment do we need? |
| Shin guards are mandatory for all practices and games. Cleated soccer shoes are needed if play will be on wet, muddy, or soft surfaces. For very young players sneakers will probably do fine. Older age groups should probably wear cleats. | |
| 27. | What does my child bring to practice? |
| A ball, soccer shoes, shin guards and plenty of water. | |
| 28. | What size of ball does my child bring to practice? |
| U6 & U8 use a size #3, U10-12 a size #4, all players U14 and above play with a size #5. | |
| 29. | Do I need to bring a signed copy of the medical release to the first practice? |
| Yes, A signed copy (does not have to be notarized) of the medical release form must be given to the coach at the first practice. The coach will be responsible for keeping the signed medical release forms and should have them available at each practice and game. The medical release form can be downloaded from our website at http://www.eg40004.com/soccer/forms.html . | |
| 30. | Can I wear a cast (or earrings, religious medals, eyeglasses)? |
| The Laws of the Game (a copy of which can be purchased at any soccer store) prohibit anything that is dangerous to a player or other players. Referees determine if an item can be worn without being dangerous. | |
| 31. | What if it is raining? |
| Soccer is played in the rain, cold, sleet and snow, but never during a thunderstorm. A referee is the only one that can call the game. If it starts to thunder during a game, the referee usually will stop the game for 10 to 15 minutes to see if it stops. If not, he will probably call the game. If it is thundering before you leave to go to a game, contact your coach to see if your game has been cancelled. If you can’t reach anyone, you should probably go to the field – it might not be raining there. Always make sure the coach has every number you can be reached at in case a practice or a game needs to be cancelled for any reason. | |
| 32. | How many games do you play and when? |
| Except for Under 6, which plays six games, all age groups play 8 regular season games. These are played mostly on Saturday, with some Sunday games. U-8 will have an in-house post-season tournament which is played over one weekend and all teams will play at least two games. As for U-10 and above they can play in either the Commonwealth Cup in the fall or the Kohl’s Cup in the spring and are usually guarantee three games at the minimum. | |
| 33. | How much playing time does my child receive? |
| Every child in recreational soccer gets one-half of a game playing time. If a game has four quarters then your child would get to play at least two quarters. However, if you are late to a game, that time could be deducted from your child’s playing time. If you feel at any time that your child is not receiving his/her share of playing time, contact your age group commissioner (see Board Members) to advise that there is a problem. You should advise the age group commissioner of any concern that you have. Remember, you signed your child up to play soccer – a team sport – if your child does not attend regular practice or is late to games, it is not fair to the others. | |
| 34. | I would like to become more involved. What can I do? |
| Nelson County Youth Soccer Board positions are frequently open. We also need volunteers to work the concession stand. Most importantly, you can volunteer to be a “Team Parent”. This is a parent who helps the coach with organizational issues such as team snacks. | |

After you have your team roster then may choose another assistant from your roster. All coaches and assistant coaches must fill out the coach’s application form (social security number is mandatory) so that a background check can be performed on that person. | 36. | When do we practice? |
| At the coaches’ meeting the coaches will select their practice times using a lottery procedure. OTHER QUESTIONS |
|
| 39. | Do you use certified referees? |
| Yes, NCYSA uses certified referees. A lot of our referees are young (You can become a referee at 12. We always ask that parents remember that these are young adults and that refereeing any sport is not easy and mistakes are made. Please try to refrain from making comments about calls regardless of the age of the referee. If you are interested in becoming a referee, please contact the NCYSA referee commissioner to find out when the next certification class will be held. We always need referees, especially adult (male or female). This is an excellent way to learn the rules and really understand the game (then when you are screaming handball – handball and the referee does not call it, you will know why). We also pay our referees. | |
| 40. | Where can I find out more about soccer? |
| We have provided links to soccer web sites on our Links page. You can also find lots of books at either bookstores or soccer specialty stores, along with videotapes that will explain the game. We encourage all parents, especially if their children like the sport, to find out more about the game. | |
